How to Prevent Shedding and Care for Lace Frontals, Closures, and Wigs

How to Prevent Shedding

Any extensions are entitled to experience minimum shedding. Aggressive combing and constant wear may cause more shedding. Chemically processed hair will shed and matte excessively. Luxury Wigs by Elvira hair are free of chemicals and will only experience normal shedding. We know that high-quality hair is an investment and we don’t want to see you brush it away. You can use the tips below to prevent shedding. 💡

Tips:

  1. Before installing, unravel the hair bundle and lay it flat on a table. Applying weft sealant to one side of the weft should suffice. Wait until the sealant completely dries, then you can install it.
  2. Do not cut the wefts/tracks! Ask your stylist to fold over the track.
  3. Sew around your wefts! Sewing through the wefts will cause the weft to loosen and cause shedding immediately!
  4. Use minimum hair products. Refrain from using hair products that are heavy or contain proteins because they will harden and matte the hair.
  5. Wash your hair at least once every two weeks to cleanse the oil and build-ups that cause tangling and matting.
  6. Comb out the tangles before shampooing and conditioning. Not properly detangling hair before washing will cause matting.
  7. Air-drying the hair is the best! Blow dryers and heat will make your hair dry and lifeless. If you have to blow dry your hair, use a heat protectant. 🔥
  8. Wrap your hair in a satin/silk bonnet when you go to sleep. This will prevent tangling. 😴
  9. Do not bleach or color your extensions unless you are a 100% professional hairstylist. Any improper chemical process will completely change your hair’s nature, you may lose your patterns or even cause hair breakage.

How to Care for Lace Frontals, Closures, and Wigs

Tips:

  1. Be very careful and gentle when handling closures, frontals, and lace wigs. Lace is a very delicate fabric and laced-based closures and frontals should always be applied by a professional hairstylist. Any aggressive combing and plucking with tweezers may puncture through the lace and cause balding.
  2. Avoid scratching with hard foreign objects as it will rip the lace! 🥺
  3. Avoid bleaching the lace as it will prompt shedding and balding. Chemicals will loosen your knots and the lace fabric and prompt shedding. Bleach-free concealer powders are recommended.
  4. Spraying a sealant to help prevent shedding is recommended.
  5. Reapply lace-based products every 2-3 weeks depending on your technician and the speed of your hair growth. Sometimes a steady install will last 3-6 weeks.
  6. Change your parting! Parting at the same place will cause the hair to thin out prematurely.
  7. Wash gently! The knots at the lace part will loosen if the hair is washed aggressively.
  8. Avoid applying heat directly as it damages the lace and the hair. 🔥
  9. Re-sealing the knots after every wash can help prevent shedding. Note: you can’t seal the knots after the hair is installed.
  10. Use fingers or a wide-tooth comb to brush your hair daily to avoid any tangles. Please do not comb through curlier textures as it will cause tangling. Style your curly hair by using your fingers. 💁‍♀️
  11. Longer hair (20″-30″) may experience more shedding than shorter lengths due to friction. When you comb the hair, gently comb it by small strands working from the ends to the top. Be patient with long hair since it requires higher maintenance. If your hair has tangles after long use, spray wig-specific conditioner and comb carefully.
  12. Wash your hair with wig-specific shampoo and avoid using shampoo too frequently as shampoo is known to matt hair up. Washing with conditioner and deep conditioning is always good for the hair. Make sure to avoid hot water when washing your hair.
  13. Hand-tied and stitched hair onto lace and wefts may experience some level of shedding. It is normal as long as it’s not excessive.
  14. Treat your colored hair wigs and blonde wigs gently because it takes extra processing to achieve the lighter color. Colored hair needs the most gentle care since it is not as strong as natural-colored hair. 🎨
  15. Avoid wearing your wig to sleep as it may cause breakage, matting, and shedding. Our wigs can all be turned into glueless; consult with your stylist on how to protect the hair.
